The authority has discussed with media professionals on the role of media in promoting the right people with disabilities.

Addis Ababa, December 16, 2023 (E.M.A)

The Ethiopian Media Authority, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Scholarly Blind Women's Association, held a discussion with media professionals and other stakeholders regarding the role of the media in promoting the rights of people with disabilities.

During the discussion, Mrs. Dureti Tadesse, the Authority's Women and Social Affairs Coordinating Director, said that the media has a major responsibility in changing stereotypes about people with disabilities.

The manager of the Ethiopian Scholarly Blind Women's Association, Mrs. Bekelech Tiraye, expressed her gratitude to the authority for organizing the forum in collaboration with the association to increase the benefits of the disabled.

In the discussion, it was pointed out that the media should take into account the problems faced by the disabled in education, work, and other social, economic, and political issues and respect access to information by providing media coverage to ensure the benefits of the disabled.

The participants said that people with disabilities are seldom covered in the media, and when they are featured, they are often negatively stereotyped and not appropriately represented. They also stated that by increasing awareness and understanding of disability issues and the diversity of people with disabilities and their situations, the media should actively contribute to the effective and successful integration of people with disabilities in all aspects of societal life.

At the end of the discussion, successful women with disabilities shared their experiences with the participants.
